First-ever cage-free duck commitment in China
The cage-free movement is expanding from chickens to ducks — a signal for the whole industry
Xiao Diao Li Tang, a ~60-location restaurant chain famous for its Peking duck, has committed to sourcing 100% cage-free duck and chicken by 2030.
According to Lever Foundation, this marks the first-ever cage-free duck policy pledge.
Xiao Diao Li Tang’s cage-free sourcing (for both meat and eggs) is inseparable from their "fresh and healthy" brand promise — allowing birds to develop naturally in ways that improve the end product.
On the producer side, Xuri Egg Products, one of China's largest duck egg exporters, has also pledged to make 100% of its exported eggs cage-free by the end of this year.
What can Vietnamese businesses learn from this? Animal welfare is a part of good business. Vietnam’s duck industry already has a significant advantage — it is already predominantly cage-free.
As the industry grows, producers now face an important choice: build on the welfare standards and quality that already set them apart, or sacrifice them for faster production.
With consumers and corporate buyers increasingly seeking cage-free supply chains, maintaining and improving cage-free systems is the path forward.
